We were founded in 1955 to be a place for Glasgow University students to enjoy Scottish country dance. In the years since we have grown, and now provide classes for beginners and beyond, introducing generation after generation of students to the dance form.
Since our inception, we have worked closely with other University SCD clubs, from St Andrews, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Newcastle and beyond, attending the Scottish University Scottish Country Dance Festival (SUSCDF) since its inception in Stirling in 1970.
We also work closely with other SCD groups in the Glasgow area. The RSCDS Glasgow branch, who run a number of events and balls throughout the year which we attend, and Alba SCD, our alumni group, founded in 1994, who run children’s classes and monthly social dancing.
Our Executive Committee
We are run by a large committee of enthusiastic members, who are elected to the position twice a year at our AGM and EGM. They are led by an Executive made up of the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.
Our Executive for the 2019-2020 session are:
President – Shona Holmes
Hi! I’m Shona and I’m a linguistics student. This will be my third year in the club and I’m excited for all the dancing and fun stuff we’re going to do! My other hobbies include drawing, singing, and hiking.
Vice-President – Ellie Hodson Walker
Hi I’m Ellie
I’m a second year geography and business student and this is my second year of fun in GUSCDC! I enjoy crafts, sports, hiking and of course dancing. I have a weakness for chocolate and urban fantasy books. Oh, and I’m older and therefore wiser than wee president Shona. I’m really looking forward to a year of dancing with everyone!
Treasurer – Ann-Kristin Malz
Hi! My name is Ann and I’m a first year physics student. I’ve been dancing in the club for almost a year now, and I’m very much looking forward to all the fun dances we’re going to learn next! Except dancing, my favorite hobbies include horseback riding, hiking/climbing and reading books.
Secretary – Matthew Anderson
Hi, I’m Matthew, I’m studying Music, and this will be my second year on committee. Outside dance class, I enjoy singing, photography, and trains.
